After new kitchen cabinets were installed in a single-family home, the manufacturer received complaints from the homeowner about multiple chemical sensitivity symptoms thought to be related to formaldehyde. Cardno ChemRisk assessed formaldehyde exposure and human health risks from the kitchen cabinets using product testing data and indoor air models to predict the potential air concentrations of formaldehyde from the cabinets over time, from delivery to installation.





Formaldehyde in Wood Products Kitchen

A consumer wood product manufacturer received a notice that it was not Proposition 65 compliant according to the State of California. Cardno ChemRisk experts evaluated formaldehyde emission testing, and using exposure models, estimated the potential exposure to formaldehyde based on the use of the product. The exposure values were used in a risk assessment to compare to the California Proposition 65 1 in 100,000 risk level. Wood product emission values were further compared to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards, and compliance with both Proposition 65 and CARB was evaluated.





NapkinPCBs in Recycled Paper 

There are low levels of PCBs in recycled paper products. Some of these paper products, such as napkins, are used to clean the face and hands. To evaluate Proposition 65 compliance, a manufacturer of these recycled paper products requested an assessment of potential PCB exposures to recycled paper users. . Cardno ChemRisk staff evaluated the leaching of PCBs from recycled paper napkins and paper towels, and assessed the potential exposures of napkin and paper towel users via dermal uptake and incidental ingestion of released PCBs. The estimated dose was compared to the Proposition 65 “no significant risk level” for PCBs, and the calculated incremental cancer risks were compared to the Proposition 65 criterion of one excess cancer in 100,000 individuals.
