If chemicals are released into the environment during various stages of a product’s life cycle, they could potentially impact the ecosystem in which they are released. Cardno ChemRisk scientists consider the environmental compartment in which the chemical may reside and use their knowledge of the ecotoxicological properties of the chemical to understand the potential environmental health risk. Chemical characteristics such as persistence and bioaccumulation are important to understand and can be evaluated using computational programs such as BIOWIN, CATABOL and TOPKAT. While these models are good screening tools, Cardno ChemRisk scientists understand their limitations and can address these through refined laboratory testing procedures, providing a more realistic view of the chemical’s interaction in the ecosystem.
