Biography

Suren Bandara is a Health Scientist II with Cadno ChemRisk. His principal areas of training and expertise are Neurotoxicology and modeling human exposure to xenobiotics such as PCBs, BPA, genistein, and pesticides.

Dr. Bandara completed his PhD in Neuroscience with a focus on Neurotoxicology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he managed a research project focused on identifying the ototoxic effects of developmental exposure to PCBs. During his doctoral work, Dr. Bandara also designed and executed experiments to identify the ototoxic effects of developmental exposure to xenobiotics and how those exposures may exacerbate noise induced hearing loss in adulthood. He also contributed to research that modeled human exposure to the phytoestrogen genistein and BPA in a rat model of working memory.

Following his PhD, Dr. Bandara continued Neurotoxicology research as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California-Davis where he developed a novel zebrafish model of seizures. This model was used to develop novel mechanistically targeted anticonvulsants against chemical threat agent induced seizures. During his postdoctoral training, Dr. Bandara also generated transient GABAA knockdown lines of zebrafish using morpholino and CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing techniques to identify specific molecular targets of potentially lethal chemical threat agents..
