Cardno ChemRisks’s VP of Corporate Sustainability, Tony Kingsbury, recently spoke at the fourth annual Next Generation Bio-Based Chemicals Summit in San Diego, CA.  He contributed to the BioManufacturing and Scale-Up Symposium by presenting on the potential risks of bio-based chemical manufacturing.  Bio-based chemicals are derived from renewable raw materials and offer many advantages as alternatives to conventional fossil fuel feedstocks.  However, once bio-based technologists identify their preferred conversion pathway for products such as ethanol, polyols, surfactants, etc., they typically find there are quite a few other products in their waste stream.  Unintended byproducts of bio-based chemical manufacturing include similar, but undesired molecules; emissions from the agricultural and processing portion of the life cycle; toxic components; and genetically modified constituents.
