Every year the staff at Cardno ChemRisk's Chicago office take a vote and choose a local charity to volunteer for and this year we decided to spend a day volunteering for PAWS Chicago. We spent the day learning about this animal shelter that is committed to ending the euthanasia of homeless cats and dogs. They have built a model shelter and hope to bring their plan to other cities across the United States. We helped with stocking supplies, creating information packets and cleaning around the shelter. Then for the last thirty minutes of our visit we were able to socialize with the cats and dogs, this was in an effort to keep them socialized with humans, but it was also fun for us! It was a valuable experience and a great way to spend the morning.

San Francisco employees attended the fifth annual holiday party benefiting the Family House foundation. This benefit was led by our colleague, Dana Hollins, who is also on the advisory board for the organization. Family House is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization providing temporary housing to families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. The two current locations sustain nearly a 100% occupancy rate and can accommodate 107 people per night. Over the course of a year Family House serves more than 2,000 families.

By providing care, comfort and community, Family House eases the burdens families face when dealing with a child's life-threatening illness. With continued support, Family House will be able to ensure that families will receive the same care, comfort and compassionate housing completely free of charge while their child receives care at the new hospital.

The San Francisco office recently volunteered at the SF-Marin Food Bank, which serves 225,000 people a year – only 14% of whom are homeless. Volunteers at the food bank perform a variety of tasks, including cleaning produce, repackaging bulk foods into family-sized portions, and sorting donations. The volunteer power at the food bank is impressive – it takes 25,000 volunteers to help distribute the 45 million pounds of food sent out each year.

The San Francisco office's task was to repackage rice into smaller portions and by the end of the shift over two tons of rice was ready to be sent off. This is a great opportunity to get more involved in your community and to give back to those in need. To find a food bank near you, please click here.
